Scholarship Information

To apply for the Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship, please include the following with the completed scholarship application:

  • This completed scholarship application, typed or printed.
  • A persuasive cover letter addressed to the selection committee expressing a desire to receive the scholarship.
  • At least one letter of recommendation from a media studies teacher or employer.
  • A copy of the applicant’s published print or broadcast work (i.e. clipping from a student newspaper or other publication, or a broadcast disk with a total running time of no more than 20 minutes.)
  • High school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores. Copies must be attached to this application.
  • An essay (no more than two pages double spaced, single sided) on the topic: How I have and how I will promote minority excellence and success in print or broadcast journalism.

Lem Tucker…A celebrated Journalist and CMU Alumnus

For 11 years, a four-year scholarship named after Lem Tucker has been awarded to an incoming CMU student.  Tucker was a 1960 CMU graduate, an Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist and a pioneer in the field.  Tucker worked for all three major networks before his death in 1991.

Kyle Goodall, Lake Orion
2008 Recipient
Kyle Goodall of Lake Orion is the 2008 Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship recipient. Goodall was praised for his “outstanding character, creativity, leadership, and championing of diversity” in letters of recommendation for the honor. Goodall has been active at Lake Orion in Forensics, National Honor Society, Thespian Society Troupe, Show Choir, Special Olympics, and much more. His broadcast journalism experiences have included attending a Television Production Workshop, serving as producer, director, anchor, and reporter. He also earned awards from Orion Neighborhood Television in animation, personality profiles, and field reporting. Goodall comes to CMU with diverse journalistic interests. He tentatively plans to study broadcast and cinematic arts, secondary education, and Chinese.

Patricia Emenpour, Saginaw
2007 Recipient
Patricia began her freshman year at CMU in the fall of 2007.  She graduated from Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy.  She was actively involved in her high school’s publications.  She filled various roles at her school including business manager and prose/poetry editor for the school’s award-winning art and literary magazine, ICONS.  She served as co-feature editor of fusion, the school newspaper.   As a CMU student, Patricia serves as a staff writer for CM Life and has written for Honors Bound.  Patricia is also currently serving as a member of Larezelere’s DREAM (campus-wide leadership conference).

Angela Hernandez, Allen Park
2006 Recipient
Angela served as opinion editor for Allen Park High School’s Jaguar Journal and also served as a student reporter and photographer for that publication.  She was very involved in athletics, and she volunteered for a variety of causes, including Relay for Life and March of Dimes.  Currently a sophomore at CMU Angela holds many leadership positions. She is a Campus Ambassador, serves as an Executive Board Member (Historian) 2007-2008 on the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and CMU’s Honors Program.  Angela will be participating in a short-term study abroad during the 2008 Spring semester.  

Kameel Stanley, Port Huron
2005 Recipient
A Port Huron High School graduate, Kameel was editor-in-chief of The Lighthouse, Port Huron High School’s student newspaper, was vice president of the school’s Student Council, and served as secretary of her class. She is a dedicated volunteer who works with the Red Cross and other organizations to serve her community.  Kameel is studying journalism and has completed internships at the Jackson Citizen Patriot, Grand Rapids Press, and St. Petersburg Times in Florida.  Kameel is currently serving as Managing Editor for CM Life.

Sara Martinez, Saginaw
2004 Recipient
Sara was a member of the Arthur Hill Network News, a daily-aired school news broadcast at her high school and was a member of the National Honor Society.  At CMU, She produced a short movie for one of her Broadcast and Cinematic Arts classes.  Sara also served in the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and was selected for a position with their program council.

Melita Tolbert, Belleville
2003 Recipient
Melita served as Editor of the "Tiger Paw Print" newspaper at Belleville High School and was a member of the National Honor Society. While at Central she became active in her residence hall as a member of the Calkins Hall council and worked at the front desk. She also accepted a position to write for CM Life, CMU’s nationally acclaimed student newspaper.

Kirkland Crawford, Detroit
2002 Recipient from CMU, 2006 CMU Broadcast and Cinematic Arts Graduate
Kirkland anchored the sports report on “News Central” an hour-long news program awarded College Television Station of the Year by the Michigan Broadcasters Association. He was a frequent contributor to the award winning campus newspaper, CM Life, and to MHTV Sports. He was also part of the radio broadcast announcer team for CMU sports. He completed internships at the Detroit Free Press where he worked as a high school senior, and at The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Indiana after his freshman year at CMU. He was named Sports Director of Modern Rock 91.5 for the 2005-2006 school year.  Mr. Crawford currently works with the Detroit Free Press as a Sports Writer, Agate Editor and Assistant Web Editor.

Shavonne Singleton, Holt
2001 Recipient, 2005 CMU Journalism Graduate
Shavonne worked as a staff writer for CMU’s Public Relations and Marketing department and for CM Life. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, member of Golden Key National Honor Society, and was on the Dean’s List all through college. She graduated in May 2005.  She received a Masters of Science degree in Public Relations at Boston University.

Mark Green, Farmington Hills
2000 Recipient, 2005 CMU Journalism Graduate
Mark completed an internship at The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He graduated with a B.A in Journalism and a minor in both public affairs and political science.    He is currently employed as the Sports Information Director at St. Thomas University, Miami Gardens, Florida, while he pursues his masters degree in Sports Administration.

Iveory (Morris) Perkins, Saginaw
1999 Recipient, 2003 CMU Journalism Graduate
Iveory pursued many opportunities as a student and completed internships at The Saginaw News and The Detroit News where she eventually worked as a reporter.  She graduated cum laude in May of 2003.  She just recently became the mother of daughter, Makenzie.  She has left The Detroit News to be a stay-at-home mom but plans to freelance for The Detroit News.  Iveory is exploring the possibility of teaching a Journalism class at a community college.

Stacey Watson, Southfield
1998 Recipient, 2003 CMU Journalism Graduate
Stacey was a dynamic contributor to campus life in leadership roles with student and community service organizations and as a writer for CM Life. She was an anchor for the co-curricular broadcast programs News Central and WMHW-FM.  She completed an internship at WXYZ-Channel 7 in Detroit.  She served as Nataki Taliba’s Quiz Bowl coach in their first year of participation. Stacey is currently teaching 8th grade social studies and language skills at the Nsoroma Institute in Oak Park.

Bridget Perkins, Detroit
1997 Recipient, 2001 CMU Integrated Public Relations Graduate
Bridget was the first recipient of the Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship. After Bridget graduated from CMU, she worked for the NAACP in Detroit and is now pursuing a graduate degree in Digital Rhetoric and Professional Writing.
