Recruitment and Hiring of Faculty

These guidelines are designed to assist the departments in the College of Communication and Fine Arts recruit faculty and conduct successful searches. They include recommendations and policies developed by the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the Affirmative Action Office, and Faculty Personnel Services. A complete, but more general set of guidelines maintained by the Affirmative Action Office will be found at http://www.cmich.edu/Affirmative_Action_Office/Search_Information.htm.

Additional forms can be found at: http://www.fps.cmich.edu/forms/forms_preemployment.asp

Before the search begins:

  • Faculty Appointment Activity Record: Departments should take great care in completing the Faculty Appointment Activity Record (available online at http://www.fps.cmich.edu/documents/ActivityRecord.doc) This is the official University record that will be used if any complaint regarding equal opportunity or discrimination should be filed. It is also the written record that will be reviewed by the Dean’s Office and by Faculty Personnel Services in approving departmental recommendations throughout the hiring process.

  • Importance of timely actions: It is important for departments to realize that in recruiting candidates for our positions, the University and the department are in competition with other universities and other employers. While it is important to do a careful evaluation of all candidates, it is also important to conduct the search in an expeditious manner. Every year the University loses exceptionally qualified candidates because they are offered and accept positions with other universities who have moved more quickly than we have. While it is recognized that some delay is beyond the control of the department, it is important that the department move through the recruitment process as quickly as possible while maintaining careful consideration of all candidates. It is the goal of the College of Communication and Fine Arts to offer all tenure-track faculty positions prior to the end of January.

  • Recruitment, not searches: Just as we are evaluating candidates for our positions, candidates are evaluating Central Michigan University and the specific department that is conducting the search. Departments should conduct their searches in a professional manner presenting the department and University in the most positive way. In addition to the formal interview, departments are encouraged to provide candidates with tours of campus as well as the community. The Mt. Pleasant Chamber of Commerce publishes a community guide and business directory that you might wish to distribute.

  • Who pays for What?: Departments should familiarize themselves with these arrangements BEFORE the search begins!
