About the College
"One ought, every day at least, to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture and, if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words." - Johann Wolfgang Goethe
This quote well describes what we do in the College of Communication and Fine Arts. We paint, conduct, act, direct, design, sing, write, compose, film, debate, dance, report, edit, interpret, sculpt, choreograph, draw, weave, cast and broadcast.
The College of Communication and Fine Arts is made up of four departments and one school: the Department of Communication and Dramatic Arts, the Department of Journalism, the School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts, the Department of Art, and the School of Music. We have 1800 majors in the College, 150 dedicated faculty members, and 25 technical and support staff members.
All of the above activities engage students in important transferable skills. Students learn how to see, how to analyze problems, how to solve problems creatively and how to work in groups. Students learn the value of trusting intuition, a belief without which quantum leaps cannot be made. Students learn to appreciate art and the diverse cultures who have produced it, an appreciation without which a community cannot exist. Students learn to be flexible and innovative, a skill without which they cannot meet the future prediction that they will have 3-4 careers in a lifetime. All of this work is tightly woven into a learning tapestry by the threads of instruction, mentorship, work and play. There is plenty of opportunity to write, speak and make visual and musical communication both with and without technology. What we teach lasts a lifetime.
